I stumbled across O’Reilly Network: More on the Mono Developer Meeting [Mar. 11, 2004] which details quite nicely the ideas behind Novell’s iFolders. I think that this may just solve a lot of the problems that I have been thinking about in relation to managing files in a simple manor. It includes tracked metadata and easy sharing and syncing. And by opening up the client they will allow some really interstering intergration with Linux applications and avaliablity on all platforms.

I did have a look at the colon classification system by Ranganathan and while facinating in a historical way , ( So that’s where yahoo and dmoz come from) it is not quite right. I did not want a system that meant I had to classify all my documents to ever find them again. I want the computer to do all that sort of boring stuff! One thing that I did realise by reading a bit about colon classification is that there is a whole new world of sorting, filing, indexing ideas out there and I have nowhere enough time to read about it all!
